The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is the regulator most players outside the UK have heard of, and the one whose rules change most often. If you live in Great Britain, it is also the only licence that matters: since 2014, any operator offering remote gambling to people in Great Britain must hold a UKGC licence, wherever the business is based.

The Commission licenses operators, personal licence holders (key staff) and suppliers. It can fine, suspend or revoke licences, and publishes its enforcement actions.
Rules That Change How You Play
What sets the UK apart is how far the rules reach into game design and account management. The most important ones, in the order they arrived:

Bonus-buy features, which let players pay to enter free spins directly, are also not offered on UK-licensed sites. That is why a game that shows a "buy feature" button elsewhere may not show it to British players.
Why These Rules Exist
The Commission's stated aims are to keep gambling fair and safe, to keep crime out, and to protect children and vulnerable people. The slot rules target speed and intensity, which the regulator links to harm. The stake limits followed a government review of the Gambling Act published in 2023. Whether each rule is well designed is debated; what is not debated is that UK players now play under a different set of conditions from almost everyone else.
Protection of Player Funds
UK operators must tell customers how well their money is protected if the operator becomes insolvent, using a rating that ranges from "not protected" to "high protection". That disclosure, rather than a single mandatory model, is the UK approach. Look for it in the terms or at registration.
Complaints and Dispute Resolution
UK licensees must have a complaints procedure and must offer access to an approved Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) provider, an independent body that can rule on disputes the operator has not resolved, usually within eight weeks of your complaint. The ADR provider is named in the operator's terms. The Commission itself does not settle individual disputes, but it uses complaints information to supervise operators.
In our experience, the eight-week clock is the most useful thing to know. If an operator has not resolved your complaint in that time, you can take it to the ADR provider named in the terms, and you should keep every email and chat transcript from the first day.
How to Check a UKGC Licence
- Find the account number. UK sites display their Commission account number in the footer, usually with a link.
- Search the Commission's public register by that number or by company name. The entry shows the licensee, its status and its domain names.
- Match the domain. The website you are using should be listed against the licence.
- Check the status. "Active" is what you want. The register also shows past regulatory action.
